58 men died when USS Utah was attacked on December 7, 1941, including six officers and 52 enlisted men.
Four of the 58 men were buried on land, but the other 54 are still entombed inside the ship.
As is the case with USS Arizona survivors, USS Utah survivors can choose to have their ashes interred on their ship. To date, seven men of USS Utah have joined their fallen shipmates.
Some people say that an infant is also entombed inside the ship, and that’s true. However, baby Lynn Wagner was not killed on December 7th, 1941. She had died two days after birth, and her father brought her ashes on board with the hope to spread them at sea. When the ship went down, the ashes stayed.
