Explore History with Pearl Harbor Tours

Seventy-five years of history comes to life on the southern coast of Oahu at the World War II Valor in the Pacific National Monument. This universally-recognized tribute to the servicemen lost on December 7th, 1941 is located at Pearl Harbor, the naval base that was the target of the surprise Japanese attack that drew the United States into the Second World War.

Travelers come from all over the globe to take part in a variety of Pearl Harbor tours, many of which encompass all of the Valor in the Pacific National Monument. Guests visit sites including the USS Arizona Memorial, built above the wreckage of the ill-fated ship, and stand on the decks of the Battleship Missouri.

A Day at Pearl Harbor

Touring Pearl Harbor

These all-encompassing treks through time start at the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center, where guests are greeted with a multitude of images from the attack. It’s not uncommon for survivors of that fateful morning to come to the center and share their stories of the unforgettable surprise attack on the unsuspecting base. Galleries titled “Road to War” and “Attack!” display relics and memorabilia from the era, giving visitors a clear look into the history of the Japanese assault on Pearl Harbor.

Continuing along all of the Pearl Harbor tours, guests watch a brief video chronicling the morning of December 7th before embarking on a US Navy shuttle boat ride to the USS Arizona Memorial. One of the most poignant experiences of the Valor in the Pacific National Monument, the wreckage of the Arizona can be seen from the serene white structure above. From the broken hull of the mighty vessel, drops of oil continue to trickle to the surface. Known as the “Black Tears of the Arizona,” the oil symbolizes the ship’s grief over the 1,177 sailors lost as she sank to the bottom of the harbor.

Arizona Memorial Internal and External

From the Arizona Memorial, tour guests are taken to the Battleship Missouri . As one of the most uplifting parts of Pearl Harbor, the Missouri was the battleship upon which Japan’s delegates signed the country’s official surrender. The interior of the “Mighty Mo” gives a look into the lives of sailors who called the battleship home during the war. The tight spaces may intimidate a casual visitor, but they were a fact of life for her crewmembers.

Most tours continue to the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, in Punchbowl Crater. Here are the resting grounds for thousands of service members who served in World War II and other conflicts since then.

The Inclusive Tour

When you join a Pearl Harbor tour, you get a complete look at the events of December 7th, 1941, starting with a walk through the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center followed by a look into two of the United States’ most notable vessels – the ill-fated USS Arizona and the triumphant Battleship Missouri.
